 firewalls

I am really new to this! I have this "friend" that has been chatting with me through instant messenger in AOL. He does this at work. He told me the other day, that his company has installed "firewalls" and now he can no longer access IM or any other type of instant messenger. But "sometimes" he can get through and e-mail me. Not knowing much about firewalls, is this possible?

Yes. Firewalls can be set to block certain ports or unathorized traffic or filter e-mail. Also, most companies monitor everything, so nothing should ever be presumed to be private.

i'm doing a project on firewalls... today is my first day 'n i don't have much idea... all i know is that its a software to deal with intrusion problems..... can u help?
